First Stroke – 點dian dot

This week I’m focusing on the dot, and characters that contain it. While practicing calligraphy, it is also vital to work on how to hold the brush, as well as how much to wet the brush and in what way the brush is moving. This is definitely still a work in progress for me, as you will see in the time-lapse of my practice just how unevenly the mat dries.

For my practice, I’m using a water based fabric practice mat. When wet, the mat turns from grey to black, and quickly dries to return to the original grey.

First I filled the mat with dots, and waited for the mat to dry off.

Then, I continued practicing dots, and also wrote some characters that contain the stroke.

The other parts of the character were lopsided and not very well done, but a lot of that is because they contain strokes that I haven’t practiced yet.
