Second Stroke – 挑tiao right-rising

A friend recently gave me a very nice little bowl that he brought back after visiting his mom in China for Chinese New Year. It is perfect for holding the water for my brush, so I’ve upgraded from the tin that I used last time. He specifically got me one with a tiger motif on the bottom of it, since I was born in the year of the tiger.

For this post I am practicing 挑tiao, the right-rising stroke.

When 水shuǐ, which means water, is used as a radical within a more complex character, something that is very common, it takes the form of 氵,which contains two dian strokes and one tiao stroke. As such, I spent some time practicing this radical.
